  • The fifth edition includes up-to-date information on each of the areas of popular and classical music covered in the text. The proportion of vernacular to classical coverage has been expanded in response to requests of users, while the text remains of a practical length. In addition, some longer chapters have been subdivided into shorter ones, easier for students to absorb and for instructors to organize into semester plans.

  • An expanded supplements package includes additional listening examples beyond what is in the text available in the Instructor’s Manual, and an expanded Online Learning Center (OLC) at www.mhhe.com/ferrisaml5. The OLC for includes chapter-by-chapter multiple-choice and true/false quizzes, "For Further Study" Questions, and Web links and Student Projects for each chapter.

  • New "Critical Thinking Topics" at the end of each chapter provide practice in articulating opinions about the music, encouraging students to use vocabulary and information gleaned from the chapter. These topics prompt students to move beyond passive reception of information to active response to the music.

  • New timelines help students to explicitly connect key events in American musical history to the broader cultural-historical context.
