According to Marx, religion is an institution designed to protect the interests of the rich, and there is no real basis for believing the spiritual tenets of any religious system. Because Marx had such a negative view of religion, during the Cold War many people assumed atheists were Marxist sympathizers. How much do contemporary atheists appear to sympathize with any other Marxist causes—his political and economic visions, for example? Explore the website of the American Atheists organization (www.atheists.org) to find out.
