Mental health issues are of concern to the U.S. government, and it is in the interests of the government to educate Americans about them. The website of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) contains a great deal of information that you can use for this purpose. Visit the site at www.nimh.nih.gov, and click on the Health Information tab at the top of the page. Click on the link to Bipolar Disorder (Manic-Depressive Illness), and What Is Bipolar Disorder. Read that information, and answer these questions.
  1. What are the key symptoms of bipolar disorder, and how prevalent is it in the population?
  2. Based on these symptoms, do you know anyone that you think might have bipolar disorder?
  3. Can people with bipolar disorder lead normal lives? How?
  4. Based on the information you read here, in what ways might someone with untreated bipolar disorder have a difficult time maintaining social relationships? In what ways might they have a difficult time maintaining a job?
  5. Do social factors, biological factors, or both cause bipolar disorder?
