Fascism is a form of government that demands extreme obedience to government authorities. An exhibit at the University of Wisconsin-Madison explores life under fascism in Italy, a period which spanned 1922-1945. Visit this site (www.library.wisc.edu/libraries/dpf/Fascism/Home.html) to learn more about fascism and how it was implemented. Link to Education (on the left-hand side of the page), and answer these questions.
  1. It is clear that the Fascist government had a heavy influence in public education. Why do you think it was important for them to do so?
  2. How do you think that a child raised in Fascist schools might differ from a child raised a generation or two earlier?
  3. To what extent does the American government have a presence in U.S. public schools? Does this impact American children in the same way you imagine it to have influenced Italian children educated in Fascist schools?
Link to Opposition to Fascism (on the left-hand side of the page).
  1. How might government actions against dissenters have played a role in securing a broader obedience to Fascism?
Read through some of the other sections of this exhibit, such as those on Fascist youth organizations and Fascist propaganda (on the left-hand side of the screen).
  1. What can you conclude about the mechanisms of obedience under Fascism?
