MNCs are extremely powerful institutions roaming the globe. They have major impacts on markets, social systems, and political institutions. Consequently, they are obliged to act responsibly to society as well as to their shareholders. Most of the large MNCs appear to have discharged their power reasonably well, but not well enough to meet and help resolve some major problems of today and tomorrow. On their behalf, we observe that complexities of doing global business raise serious economic, ethical, political, social, and moral issues for their managements. We believe more top managers of U.S. corporations, with help and prodding from government and strong activist critics, are exercising power responsibly. We continue this discussion of MNCs in the next chapter.
