What Each Chapter Has

Each chapter is driven by a key idea or concept that provides a focus for the consideration of a particular era and its landmarks. Chapter 1, "Origins," for example, asks the reader to consider the beginnings of culture and humankind's earliest civilizations; Chapter 4, "Revelation," examines the flowering of the world religions as expressions of divine truth...

Each chapter closes with a list of major ideas or lines of inquiry that have been suggested in the chapter. The list provides a starting point for further research in a wide variety of landmark-related areas, as does the Further Reading appendix at the end of the book.

Each chapter explores relationships between two or more images or ideas, or between text and image. These materials are presented together to show stylistic influence, to suggest the universality of specific themes, or to compare the treatment of significant motifs in different periods or by different cultures.

Every chapter includes boxed segments that address major historical or cultural ideas, or that illustrate specific points of view by means of primary-source quotations. The title for each Ideas and Issues extract gives focus to the quoted passage. "Ideas and Issues," like "Parallels," is intended to provoke thought and discussion.

The illustrations in each chapter function as pictorial landmarks. Their captions are frequently annotated to include information that draws attention to the special formal or stylistic features of these figures.
