To get the most out of this workbook, you should follow these suggestions:

  1. Read the purpose of each exercise and make sure you understand the instructions before beginning work.
  2. Respect your participants' anonymity and do not breach confidentiality. Do not include any information that could reveal a participant's identity to your instructor, teaching assistant, or other members of the class.
  3. Be respectful of your participants. Explain to them that you are collecting data to assist you in a class project. Answer all of their questions. Explain the purpose of the project after you have collected your data. Take the opportunity to share your understanding of the topic with them.
  4. Most research in sex and gender is based upon samples of middle-class college student participants. When you recruit volunteers to assist you in data collection, strive to obtain a diverse sample. Approach people who differ on factors such as age, race/ethnicity, education level, etc. Include these characteristics on your data sheet, and consider how these attributes may be related to your findings.
  5. Use the questions that conclude each exercise to summarize your results. Compare and contrast your findings to the research from the text and class discussion and lecture. Consider what characteristics of your participants might have influenced your results.
