Three chapters have been revised to include the work of related theorists. This includes Sandra Petronio's Communication Privacy Management in Chapter 9, Social Penetration; Neil Postman's Media Ecology in Chapter 24, Technological Determinism; and Patricia Collins' African-American Feminist Standpoint in Chapter 34, Standpoint Theory.
Six chapters feature an extension of content based on new work by the following theorists: Pearce and Cronen's Coordinated Management of Meaning (CMM)(Chapter 5), Delia's Constructivism (Chapter 8), Baxter and Montgomery's Relational Dialectics (Chapter 11), Deetz' Critical Theory (Chapter 20), Gudykunst's Anxiety/Uncertainty Management Theory (Chapter 30), and Philipsen's Communication Codes Theory (Chapter 32).
Three of the six ethical reflections discussions have been revised. These include: Cornel West's Prophetic Pragmatism (following Part Three: Group and Public Communication), Jurgen Habermas' Discourse Ethics (following Part Four: Mass Communication) and Seyla Benhabib's Interactive Universalism (following Part Five: Cultural Contexts).
"Second Look" citations have been updated in each chapter to reflect recent research.
