About the Author

Professor Sean Chamberlin teaches and conducts research at Fullerton Community College in Fullerton, California. He grew up in South Florida, where he spent much of this youth diving or watching Apollo moon rockets soar overhead. Intrigued by astronauts working underwater and enamored of the TV series Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau, he decided at the age of 10 to pursue a career in ocean science. Traversing the United States to one of the few colleges that offered an undergraduate degree in oceanography, he enrolled in the University of Washington in Seattle, where he earned bachelor's degrees in Oceanography and English. Soon thereafter, he pursued graduate studies at the University of Southern California (USC) during which time he was invited to conduct research aboard Jacques Cousteau's Calypso in the South Pacific Ocean. His work on the natural fluorescence of phytoplankton earned him a PhD in Biology. It was also at USC that he met and took courses from Professor Dickey. Following two years as a postdoctoral researcher at Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory, Professor Chamberlin worked in the environmental industry. In 1996, he joined the Natural Sciences faculty at Fullerton College, where he has taught oceanography, geology, and meteorology for more than ten years. Professor Chamberlin has been especially active in the development of tools and teaching methodologies for online education; his online oceanography course attracts students from around the world. Professor Chamberlin is also active in science education research and national initiatives for the reform of science teaching, and has presented numerous presentations and workshops on these topics. When not teaching, Professor Chamberlin can be found with camera in hand somewhere along the California coast. Otherwise, he devotes time to his website, http://exploreworldocean.com, an excellent source of additional information about the world ocean.

Professor Tommy Dickey teaches and conducts research at the University of California at Santa Barbara (UCSB). He grew up in rural Indiana and received BS and BA degrees in physics and mathematics at Ohio University. He earned an MS degree in physics by doing night studies at Stevens Institute of Technology while serving in the US Coast Guard as an instructor of electronics and human relations.
Subsequently, he studied at Princeton University, where he received MA and PhD degrees in geophysical fluid dynamics. Following a year of postgraduate research as a Rosenstiel Fellow at the University of Miami, Professor Dickey joined the faculty of the University of Southern California, teaching there for 18 years before joining the faculty at UCSB, where he has taught for over a decade. Thus far, he has instructed approximately 10,000 students during his career. Professor Dickey's research group has participated in over 180 research cruises, and he has led five major multi-institutional research programs. He has been internationally recognized for his interdisciplinary oceanographic research and development of ocean observational systems.
Professor Dickey has served in editorial capacities for four major oceanographic journals and has authored or coauthored over 100 reviewed publications. He was elected as a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union in 2006. More information concerning Professor Dickey's past and current research may be found on the website www.opl.ucsb.edu.
