Revision Changes

New Organization/Expanded Coverage: The content chapters have been reorganized to reflect the CDC’s new Health Education Curriculum Analysis Tool. Coverage has been expanded in key areas: There is now a separate chapter (Chapter 5) on mental and emotional health, and the coverage of unit and lesson planning and assessment has been expanded in Chapter 3.

Emphasis on Theory to Practice: The chapters include teaching activities that support the constructs of the Theory of Planned Behavior, and they provide lists of desired behavioral outcomes to help teachers focus on the most important goals for their students. The text presents many real world experiences from elementary and middle school classrooms.

Coverage of National Standards and Key Data Sources: The fifth edition includes the 2006 National Health Education Standards--introduced in Chapter 3 and used as the organizing principle for all the teaching activities presented in the content chapters. The new edition also provides relevant current data from Healthy People 2010, the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System, and the School Health Policies and Programs Study.

Additional Teaching Activities: The "Strategies for Learning and Assessment" sections have been expanded to include many new activities; additional activities are also provided on the text’s Online Learning Center. A new appendix indexes all the activities from the text and Online Learning Center according to content areas, standards, and other criteria.

Updated Coverage of Key Topics: Updated topics include the links between health and academic achievement and the implications of the No Child Left Behind act. The background information on health has also been updated throughout, including material on the new Dietary Guidelines and MyPyramid food guidance system.

Updated and Refined Pedagogy: Learning objectives have been added to each chapter. Internet and children's literature resource sections have been updated and expanded, and many new teaching activities incorporate websites and children’s books.

Full-Color Design: The colorful new design highlights the children's art and enhances the illustrations and other pedagogical features of the book.

Expanded Instructor and Student Supplements: New for the fifth edition, the Online Learning Center includes updated versions of the instructor’s supplements (Instructor’s Manual, test bank, PowerPoint slides) and many new student resources: self-correcting review quizzes, portfolio activities, Appendix C (a searchable index to all the teaching activities in the text), Web links, and much more.
