Most of the news reports on computer security involve an outsider breaking into a company's computer, or hackers who steal services and spread viruses, worms, and otherwise cause trouble.

However, the most costly security breaches are those that happen from within an organization. That is, a company faces much greater financial losses from its own employees than from outsiders. And, even worse, most of these insider losses are caused by executives embezzling, "adjusting" reports, and transferring funds, goods, and services inappropriately.

Organizations must, therefore, implement a number of security measures to try and protect their assets and computer systems from criminals inside and outside the organization.
