Culture: What Makes Us Strangers When We Are Away From Home?

Chapter 2 introduces the broad and notoriously hard-to-define concept of culture. From this chapter, you should be able to outline the basic anthropological explanations of culture and to describe the major aspects of culture. The "Try This" exercises in the margins of Chapter 2 will help you begin to view your own culture from an anthropological perspective. Subcultures and ethnic groups are also explained. Finally, race is considered from the anthropological perspective which views race as a cultural construct.

At the completion of this chapter students should be able to:

Explain how anthropologists define culture

Delineate important aspects of culture

Discuss subcultures, ethnic groups, and race

Describe culture in the subfields of anthropology

Critique the concept of culture
