Subsistence Strategies and Resource Allocation I: What Challenges Face Foragers?


This chapter introduces the food-procurement strategy of foraging. An evolutionary-ecological model and its background is presented. The evolutionary-ecological model is then used as a framework present subsistence strategies and methods of resource allocation in this chapter and Chapter 6.

At the completion of this chapter students should be able to:

Describe models of cultural evolution and cultural ecology

Identify subsistence strategies within the framework of an evolutionary-ecological model

Examine economic systems within the evolutionary-ecological model

Examine the adaptive strategy of technology

Identify the strategies common to foraging
