On the main menu under Ethnographic Examples click on A Turkish Peasant Village. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on marriage. Examine the rules relating to Turkish marriage patterns (derived from the ethnography Turkish Village by Paul Stirling). Then answer the following questions:

1. What are the rates of endogamy for the women residents of the village of Sakaltutan? What are the rates of endogamy for women residents of the village of Elbasi? What are the rates of endogamy for women who were born in each village?
2. How are the differences between rates of village endogamy explained by Sterling?
3. What are the advantages (functions) of village endogamy in this case?

Study the data compiled by Heider in the case study on polygyny. What percentage of adult men among the Dani had two or more wives? How many wives did men have? Read the section on Bride Payments. Note that payments are made over the course of marriage and neither the bride nor groom's family appears to gain real wealth in the exchanges. Hypothesize about what function this may have in the Dani culture.

Research two wedding planning web sites on the topic of wedding finance. Who pays for what (bride's family, groom's family, or the couple)? Do all sources agree. Hypothesize how the division of wedding finance responsibility may effect future family relations.
