The Baroque was a style-conscious age of contrasts. Catholics and Protestants vied for religious authority, and secular art commanded unprecedented significance. Important advances were made in science and philosophy. Composers wrote both instrumental and vocal music, contrasting homophonic with polyphonic textures. Contrasts of timbre, alternation of free and metered rhythms, and abrupt changes of dynamic levels were also characteristic of this dramatic style.
