• There is, in fact, a real Two-Hearted River in northern Michigan. This website, advertising a canoe trip, has information and pictures about the river.

• Hemingway, as he often did, based these stories on events of his life, particularly his extensive hiking and fishing trips in Northern Michigan. This site, describing the town of Seney, Michigan, has details on one such trip that Hemingway took, one which may have formed the direct inspiration for "Big Two-Hearted River, Parts I & II"
