  • Emphasis on Critical Thinking: The sixth edition features an expanded emphasis on thinking critically about literature and information on arguing about literature. The thoroughly revised introduction explains to students the importance of thinking critically and helps them develop strategies that will get them thinking critically about literature. The critical thinking component is reinforced in Questions for Critical Thinking and Writing that appear throughout the text, for works in every genre.

  • New Chapters on Envisioning Literature: Each genre features new visual chapters that show how artists visually interpret that genre. Chapter 29: Envisioning Drama shows students with reproductions and photographs how Glass Menagerie and Death of a Salesman went from sketches to staged performances. Chapter 16: Envisioning Poetry places poems and paintings side-by-side so students can compare how words interact with images. Chapter 7: Envisioning Narrative shows students how graphic novelists use narration in illustrated stories.

  • New Chapter on Literary Nonfiction: A new chapter on literary nonfiction asks students to compare the similarities of important autobiographical nonfiction with the fiction elsewhere in Part 1: Fiction. Chapter 6: Literary Nonfiction includes work by such exciting contemporary authors as Rick Bragg, Judith Ortiz Cofer, Mary Karr, Chang-Rae Lee, James McBride, and Zadie Smith.

  • New Short Stories: The sixteen new stories include both essential works--such as "The Lady with the Lap Dog" by Chekov, "The Storm" by Chopin, and "Hills Like White Elephants" by Hemmingway--and works by contemporary authors, like T.C. Boyle, Jhumpa Lahiri, and Alice Munro.

  • New Poems: The over sixty new poems include new selections by such well-known poets as Randall Jarrell, Sylvia Plath, Elizabeth Bishop, and Lucille Clifton and contemporary selections by such contemporary poets as Billy Collins, Deborah Garrison, and Taylor Mali.

  • New Plays: The three new plays in the sixth edition include the canonical Midsummer Night's Dream by Shakespeare, the comedic Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde, and the contemporary Sure Thing by David Ives.
