Strain and Cultural Deviance Theories

The psychological and biological theories of criminality seek to identify some type of mental or physical condition that causes criminals to offend, and the non-criminal not to offend. These theories are potentially useful for explaining crime at the individual level, but are not well suited for explaining why crime and criminality also vary within and between social environments. Sociological theories seek to explain this variation, and can be grouped into three general categories: strain, cultural deviance, and social control.
