No matter which functional area of business one chooses to specialize in, the profitability of the business is the overriding measure of performance. It is the end that justifies the money invested in all of the firm’s resources. While the "whats" and "hows" of business drive many decisions, profitability is the "why," and without it, nothing else matters.
