The sequential development of listening and descriptive skills is a central goal. Starting with simple music and progressing to more complex pieces, students actively develop vocabulary with which they can talk about a style and describe their reactions to it.
The choice of repertoire is comprehensive, and presented, as much as possible, without bias. The choices clearly reflect the musical and educational validity of including music other than Western European classical music in the curriculum.
Listening Guides examine in detail a recorded musical example from the CD set available with the text. The musical examples are chosen to reinforce the concepts discussed in the text, and the listening guides include a variety of strategies to assist in listening to and understanding each piece. Information includes
Background on the composer and/or piece
Goals for developing listening skills
Commentary on the music and its structure and style
Reflections on the listening experience that can serve as a catalyst for discussion in and out of class.
