A new four-color design enhances the attractiveness of the text and helps highlight key features such as Listening Guides, Chapter Outlines, photos, and artwork. The format of the Listening Guides has been improved to provide at a glance crucial CD and track information, as well as key facts concerning the piece’s composer, performer, genre, and background.
The table of contents has been reorganized in 14 chapters to better fit a typical semester schedule. Chapter 1 “Introducing the World of Music” now contains information on the music industry that was previously included in Chapter 16 of the fifth edition, and chapters on American Folk Music and American Religious Music have been merged into one chapter. Chapters, sections, or pieces can be easily omitted or emphasized to suit an individual instructor's interests and needs.
A new 3-CD set contains over 80 tracks; all the music discussed in the Listening Guides.
Full color photographs throughout the text are essential to its philosophical goals, depicting music as it is performed by people everywhere, by diverse groups of people. Expanded photo captions provide interesting information about the composers, performers, instruments, and musical periods covered in the text.

New chapter-opening outlines present an overview of the major topics covered. Following the outline, a series of questions previews questions that will be answered by reading the chapter.
