Word Painting was an important part of Baroque musical style. Using what you have learned about music since you began this course, describe how you would “paint” meaning into some specific words of songs well known to most of us today. If you were composing new music to accompany the words of The Star Spangled Banner how would you bring meaning to life? (See, light, proudly, twilight, gleaming, broad stripes, bright stars, peril, rockets, bombs bursting etc.) Use your musical imagination coupled with the specific terminology and concepts you now know to “paint” a musical word picture. Do the same for another song of your choice.
2
Handel composed for both kings and commoners. Stately and Majestic movements from the Royal Fireworks Music remind us of kings and nobles in fancy clothes and jewels. Are there musical characteristics that you associate with power, wealth, poverty, excitement, and boredom today? What creates a specific mood? Create four different moods using all musical ingredients. For example: Sad? How do you achieve this? Ecstatic . . . how?
