Using the characteristics of Nationalism as defined on page 384, compose a piece of American Nationalist Music (or that of your own country if not American or not in America.) What specific Nationalist ingredients will your song contain? Consider lyrics, style, subject matter, etc. If you want to create feelings of American pride, what specific melodies, styles or lyrics might you make reference to in your piece?

Using MUSIC ALONE make a story come to life. Two very different people meet . . . the stare into each others eyes as if in a trance . . . they fall in love . . . they argue . . . they make up, they marry, they dance, they make passionate love . . . they sleep.. . . . they dream of beautiful things. All VERY “ROMANTIC PERIOD”. Perhaps you want to add a very sorrowful and tragic death for one or both. In the Romantic period anything goes. Illustrate this story or one of your own with clips of MUSIC ALONE so your story comes to life. Use Wagner’s LEITMOTIV idea for your two characters. Use 30 second clips of recordings saved to a tape or computer. Tell your classmates the story (or don’t!) then play your tape to see how “Romantic” you’ve become.
