Impressionism in both music and art was about colors, shadings and subtlety as never before experienced. What do colors and lights sound like? Using all the building blocks of music (melody, harmony, rhythm, texture, expressive devices like accelerando and crescendo etc.) create the “sound” of red. Do the same for yellow, blue, green, black and white. Paint your picture and blend new colors as needed.

Avant-garde pieces based on something shockingly new are not generally as well accepted as those pieces created later which incorporate some of the new techniques into more traditional styles. Can you think of modern day examples of Avant-garde innovators perhaps not well accepted by the masses whose groundbreaking techniques have been successfully assimilated by others who have followed?

What are the advantages and disadvantages of electronically created music for composers, audience members and concert promoters? How does this music affect life for acoustic (non- electronic) musicians?
