Examples in Children's Readers of the "Traditional" American family

A description of the "typical" American family was absorbed by countless thousands of American school children in the "Dick and Jane" readers that were popular from the 1930s through the 1970s. Published by Scott Foresman and Company, the Dick and Jane reading series was abandoned amid heavy criticism for its unrelenting white, middle-class perspective on life in the United States.
