Exercise 1

Go to the Web site of the Research Institute of Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity (http://ccsre.stanford.edu/RI_resInst.htm) and study one of the reports on the socioeconomic and educational status of ethnic and racial minorities in California.

Write a brief paper on the findings of the reports you have looked at in terms of Aguirre and Turner's discussion of resource shares in Chapter 1 of your text.

Exercise 2

Go to the Southern Poverty Law Center's Web site (http://www.splcenter.org/) and determine what the Center's definition of discrimination means. Is it similar to or different from the way Aguirre and Turner define discrimination?

Exercise 3

Go to Dr. Pamela Oliver's lecture on the social construction of race (http://www.ssc.wisc.edu/~oliver/soc220/Lectures220/General/idenconstruct.pdf) and compare and contrast her discussion of the social construction of race and ethnicity with Aguirre and Turner's discussion in Chapter 1 of your text.

The Office of Minority Health (OMH) was created to improve and protect the health of racial and ethnic minority populations through the development of health policies and programs that address health disparities. Go to the OMH Web site (http://www.omhrc.gov/) and look at one of their reports or program descriptions.
