The Urban Institute is a nonprofit, nonpartisan policy research and educational organization that was established to examine the social, economic, and governance problems facing the nation. Go to its homepage to familiarize yourself with some of their activities and concerns. Read the report by Sarah Stavefieg and Alyssa Wigton entitled "Racial and Ethnic Disparities: Key Findings From the National Survey of America's Families" (http://www.urban.org/Template.cfm?NavMenuID=24&template=/TaggedContent/ViewPublication.cfm&PublicationID=6455) and answer the following questions:
- What are their findings on poverty?
- How would you analyze their data using the theoretical framework presented in Chapter 2 of your text?
- What do you think the findings suggest for the future?
Exercise 2 The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) (http://www.adc.org/) was formed as a grassroots civil rights organization with a mission to empower Arab Americans. This is the Web site of the Association of Multiethnic Americans. The primary goal of this organization is to educate and advocate on behalf of multiethnic individuals and families. Read some of the documents on racial identification in the United States. How does the existence of multi-ethnic people complicate the theories about race and ethnic relations that you have read about in your text? What does it mean for the future? |
