1. Understand the implications of changing immigration patterns, coupled with differential birth rates among immigrants, for the future of ethnic relations and social justice in America.

2. Determine what the future fault lines will be for ethnic tensions and conflict in American society and what forces are likely to escalate the intensity of ethnic conflict.

3. Understand the controversy and debates over diversity and citizenship.

4. Understand how the dramatic rise in the percentage of the Latino population may fuel considerable ethnic tension and conflict.

5. Understand that as Asian Americans increase their presence in middleman-minority and professional positions, conflict is likely to result between them and white Americans, Latinos, and African Americans.

6. Understand the controversy over affirmative action and other policies that have attempted to redistribute resource shares in American society.

7. Generate alternative, just ways of distributing resource shares that would mitigate the kinds of conflict that could rend society apart.
