Exercise 1

Go to the Web site on the Draft Riots of 1863 (http://www.vny.cuny.edu/draftriots/Intro/draft_riot_intro_set.html). The Draft Riots were depicted in Martin Scorsese's film "Gangs of New York." Why did the Irish immigrants riot against the draft? Why did they target African Americans who lived in New York City? Next, go to (http://r2.gsa.gov/fivept/fphome.htm). Here you can view photographs and illustrations of the archaeological site Five Points, which is where the riots occurred. There are numerous links to information you might find very interesting.

Exercise 2

The National Museum of American Jewish History provides links to the history and culture of the Jewish people in the United States. Go to the Museum's online exhibit entitled "Creating American Jews: An Exploration of the Evolution of Jewish Identity in America" (http://nmajh.org/exhibitions/caj/index.htm ). According to the exhibit, what are the new visions of Jewish identity?

Exercise 3

The Order Sons of Italy in America, a national organization for Italian Americans, produced a report on the use of Italian-American stereotypes in U.S. advertising. Download the report (http://www.osia.org/public/pdf/Advertising_Report.pdf) and write a brief paper on its findings with respect to the negative images of Italian Americans discussed in Chapter 8 of your text.
