Internet Exercises

Exercise 1

Go to the Office of Minority Health's Web site (http://www.omhrc.gov) and find data or reports on African Americans. Analyze the findings in terms of the resource shares of African Americans described in Chapter 4 of your text.

Exercise 2

Go to the American Slave Narratives-An Online Anthology Web site (http://xroads.virginia.edu/~HYPER/wpa/wpahome.html) and read some of the narratives. How do these narratives flesh out the macro-level analysis of slavery presented in Chapter 4 of your text?

Exercise 3

Go to Bobby Seale's Homepage (http://www.bobbyseale.com) and also to the Web site of the Black Radical Congress (http://www.blackradicalcongress.org/). Read the mission statements and documents you find on these sites, and then go to the site of a more "mainstream" civil rights organization, such as the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (http://www.naacp.org/) or the Congress of Racial Equality (http://www.core-online.org/). Compare and contrast the mission statements, goals, and strategies of these different organizations. Are there major differences between mainstream and more radical social movements? How do these social movements describe the 1960s?
