Exercise 1

Go to the Asian American Movement Ezine (http://www.aamovement.net/index.html). Select "History" from the menu at the top and then click on "Asian American History 101." This will give you an overview of the history of radical and revolutionary Asian-American social movements. Then go to (http://www.aamovement.net/history/eastwind.html) to find articles published in EastWind magazine. Read one of the personal narratives by Asian-American activists.
  1. Compare and contrast the historical account presented here with that presented in Chapter 7 of your text. What are the differences?
  2. Compare and contrast the Asian-American radical movements with the radical movements of the other ethnic groups you have looked at in earlier chapters of your text. What are current issues that Asian-American activists are fighting for?

Exercise 2

The "Dear Miss Breed...Letters" exhibit of the Japanese American National Museum (http://www.janmonline.org/breed/title.htm) features a selection of letters written by Japanese-American children to Clara Estelle Breed, or Miss Breed, the Children's Librarian at the San Diego Public Library from 1929 to 1945.

Read some of the letters the children wrote to Miss Breed and write a brief report on the internment-camp experience from the perspective of the children who were interned.
