In addition to being able to recognize the key terms, artists, and artworks in the chapter, you should be able to:
  1. Define the term "graphic design" and describe the function of graphic designers.
  2. Discuss the history of graphic design and its relationship to the printing press and the Industrial Revolution.
  3. Describe the use of symbols in visual communication, and discuss the ways in which meaning is culturally determined, rather than inherent in symbols themselves.
  4. Analyze the uses of logos, both by corporations and by political activists.
  5. Discuss how typography conveys ideas, moods, and emotions.
  6. Discuss the popularity of posters after the advent of color lithography, and describe their use by artists as a replacement for more traditional media such as paintings and sculpture.
  7. Discuss the advantages graphic designers enjoy as a result of computer technology, and explore some of the latest applications of these designs.
