To find out more about this process of creating a ceramic work, click on the link above. Then, find a ceramic work in the book such as the Islamic underglaze-painted mosque lamp from the Dome of the Rock (Fig. 18.8, p. 450), or Betty Woodman's Aztec Vase Number 5 (Fig. 12.1, p. 293). Can you reconstruct some of steps required to make this work, including forming the clay into the desired shape, glazing, and firing it in a kiln?

Dale Chihuly's Persian Chandelier (Fig. 12.6, p. 297) uses traditional glassblowing techniques to construct his large, colorful sculptural forms. View the video in the above link to see glassblowers at work. Then, look again at Persian Chandelier, and analyze its complexity as a work of blown glass in terms of color and form.
