In addition to being able to recognize the key terms, artists, and artworks in the chapter, you should be able to:
  1. Describe key characteristics that distinguish Renaissance art from the preceding period of the Middle Ages.
  2. Describe technical innovations introduced in art during the Renaissance, such as the new painting medium of oil and new systems for representing space.
  3. Understand the change in the social status of artists during the Renaissance, as well as the shift in art patronage.
  4. Define humanism and neo-Platonism and discuss their relationship to the Renaissance.
  5. Explain the influence of ancient Greek and Roman cultures on the Renaissance, and discuss specific Renaissance works of art where this influence is apparent.
  6. Explain Italy's role in shaping the Renaissance.
  7. Distinguish between the periods of the Early Renaissance and the High Renaissance in terms of artists, works of art, and specific characteristics of style associated with either period.
  8. Describe the evolution of Renaissance ideas in northern Europe in comparison to the developments of the Italian Renaissance, and be able to discuss northern European Renaissance artists and their works as examples.
  9. Discuss the Late Renaissance movement known as Mannerism and describe its characteristics as seen in specific Mannerist works of art.
