In addition to being able to recognize the key terms, artists, and artworks in the chapter, you should be able to:
  1. Discuss the reasons why several people can respond differently to the same art work.
  2. Expand your understanding and appreciation of art works.
  3. Understand how and why a single work of art can be classified into more than one thematic category.
  4. Discuss how some cultures assign different artistically creative roles to men and women. Explain how this may have changed over time.
  5. Discuss how certain cultures, geographical areas, or historical periods may be known particularly for some art forms more than for others.
  6. Discuss how artists and/or patrons have used art to attempt to effect changes in the social or political orders.
  7. Describe each of the themes presented in this chapter, and for each, explain how specific works of art explore these themes. The themes are:
    • Visual Delight & The Arts of Daily Life
    • The Sacred Realm
    • Politics and the Social Order
    • Stories and Histories
    • The Here and Now
    • The Human Experience
    • Invention and Fantasy
    • Art and Nature
    • Art and Art
  8. Discuss the fact that works of art may share the same theme while having completely different purposes.
