Relief prints include woodcuts, wood engravings, and linocuts. Review the process of making a relief print by clicking the link above, and then examine samples of relief prints in this chapter. How did Emile Nolde take advantage of the properties of woodcut in his The Prophet (Fig. 8.6, p. 192)? What procedures do printmakers use to create color woodcuts? (See Figs. 8.4-8.5, p. 191-192)

2. Intaglio (p. 194-199)

Both etching and aquatint are methods of intaglio printmaking, as areas that print are in depressions below the plate’s surface. View the video on intaglio printmaking by clicking on the link above, and then examine the diversity of results that can be achieved with different intaglio methods. Compare, for instance, Rembrandt’s etching (Fig. 8.14, p. 198) with Goya’s print made with etching and aquatint. (Fig. 8.15, p. 199) How does each printmaker convey light and dark shades using their respective methods?

3. Lithography (p. 199-203)

To find out more about lithography, click on the link above. Because lithographs are produced on a stone with a grease-based crayon, they can convey many of the characteristics of a drawing in a print. Looking at Kathe Kollwitz’s Death and the Mother (Fig. 8.17, p. 200), how would you reconstruct the steps she took to create it?
