Upon successful completion of this chapter, you should be able to:

  1. Contrast the naturalistic and experimental sciences.
  2. Explain why anthropology is both a scientific and humanistic activity.
  3. Describe the core ethnographic technique of participant observation, its benefits and limitations.
  4. Describe the range of field conditions in which anthropologists have worked, and compare degrees of disruption by ethnographers in the field.
  5. Differentiate ethnographic fieldwork from fieldwork by other professionals such as sociologists, educators, and journalists.
  6. Identify some of the data collection techniques used in the field by ethnographers.
  7. Explain why anthropology has ethical codes today and the implications of these codes for working anthropologists.
  8. Apply the professional code of ethics to student and faculty conduct in this course.
