Upon successful completion of this chapter, you should be able to:

  1. Explain how an apparently marginal activity, such as Newfoundland gardening,is related to some of the central human issues of our time.
  2. Explain the value of adopting a holistic perspective in the study of culture.
  3. Use a diagram to illustrate the holistic connections of culture and explain how one component of culture could affect another.
  4. Identify and distinguish six types of holistic connections between parts of a culture.
  5. Show why whole cultures should also be seen in holistic perspective with other cultures.
  6. Identify the origins of holism in ethnographic fieldwork.
  7. Define embeddedness and apply it to the interactions of cultural institutions in one society.
  8. Explain two problems arising in the holistic perspective and propose how they might be minimized.
