Upon successful completion of this chapter, you should be able to:

  1. Explain how anthropological methods are well suited to study a technological or natural disaster, and what the disaster can reveal about the social structure of the affected groups of people.
  2. Draw a diagram of the structure of statuses and roles in a social group.
  3. Explain how a group is related to the shared ideas and practices making up its culture.
  4. Describe a social structure of which its participants are not usually aware.
  5. Contrast the concept of power with that of authority.
  6. Contrast the sources and expressions of power in band-level society with those of a corporate lineage in a state-level society.
  7. Discuss whether we control our social structures or they control us.
