Videocase: Sarah Recalls Being Raped

Sarah was raped during a Spring Break in Florida. The man was an acquaintance that she had met at a bar, where they both were drinking. She talks about the role alcohol played in the encounter, realizing that both her intuitions and her inhibitions might have been more on guard had it not been for the alcohol.

What started off as “messing around” quickly became a physically abusive sexual encounter that Sarah had neither wanted nor anticipated. She says that she believes the man involved in the rape—a twenty-one year old baseball player in spring training—was not intending to rape her, but instead thought “he was going to get lucky.” For whatever reasons, things got out of control, and Sarah was forced into sexual activity against her will.

In another part of the video interview, not shown in this clip, Sarah explains that she was injured by the sexual act and had to be treated in a hospital. The man was arrested and eventually convicted in a trial.
