This video clip shows a young woman named Suki and her mother, Mary Ann Watson, talking about their approaches to sexuality during their lives. Mary Ann in a sexuality educator at Metropolitan State College of Denver, Colorado, and clearly the family has been able to discuss sexual matters quite openly.
It is particularly interesting to compare how differently the two women grew up thinking about sexual matters. Having come from an environment in which discussing sex was routine and matter-of-fact, Suki says she actually waited longer to become involved in shared sex than most of her friends did, partly because it was not as big a deal for her. She was able to integrate the experience into the relationship with her boyfriend, with whom she had taken a sexuality course in college.
Mary Ann, on the other hand, speaks of how secretive the topic had been, and how much pressure she had faced to postpone sexual interactions until marriage. She indicates that it seems unrealistic to expect people to be able to achieve sexual satisfaction and happiness without having had a chance to learn more about sexuality.
