Features

  • Modules Within Chapters Format. Feldman has a modular format, but for instructors who prefer to assign complete chapters, there is a seventeen-chapter structure as well. Each page of the module refers to the chapter that module is in.
  • Extensive Pedagogy. The text has an extensive pedagogical system throughout each module and chapter, guiding students through the material, with key concept questions, prologues, looking ahead sections, running glossaries, recap/evaluate/rethink segments, looking back sections and epilogues. This pedagogy was designed by Bob Feldman based on the proven work he has done for years in the areas of Student Success and First Year Experience.
  • Student Friendly Applications. Feldman's text has plentiful applications throughout, including Applying Psychology in the 21st Century and Becoming an Informed Consumer of Psychology sections in every chapter. The chapter prologues and examples throughout the chapter are also designed to help students see the real benefits of psychological research.
  • Focus on Diversity. Understanding Psychology has diversity woven into the material throughout the text. Additionally, each chapter contains at least one Exploring Diversity section devoted to an aspect of racial, ethnic, gender, or cultural diversity. These features focus on the contributions of psychology to a better understanding of multicultural issues that are so central to our global society.
  • Visual Mastery Reviews. Five key concepts are presented in a visual rather than written form. These concepts were selected as the most challenging for students by instructors participating in McGraw-Hill’s We Listen program. They are followed by Evaluate/Rethink questions, derived from Bob Feldman’s own test questions, to help ensure student understanding.
  • Optional Modules on Diversity and I/O Psychology. For instructors who like to incorporate lectures on diversity or industrial/organizational issues in their introductory psychology course, optional full-color modules on these topics can be packaged with students’ copies of the text. The Diversity module discusses the roots of diversity and addresses related issues, such as conflict and cooperation. The module on Industrial-Organizational Psychology broadly introduces this growing area of interest.
  • Activity Prompts. Throughout the book are text references and marginal icons that will guide readers to virtual activities that are part of a framework for learning surrounding the text.
