About the Authors

Amir D. Aczel is with the Center for Philosophy and History of Science at Boston University and with the University of New Hampshire, and is an occasional business commentator on CNN. He earned his B.A. in mathematics and M.S. in operations research from the University of California–Berkeley, and he was awarded his Ph.D. in statistics from the University of Oregon. Prior to assuming his current position, Aczel lived and taught in California, Alaska, Europe, the Middle East, and the Far East. Aczel is the author of 14 books on mathematics, business, and statistics. His best known book, Fermat's Last Theorem, discusses the quest to prove a heretofore unprovable mathematical theorem. The recently published Chance is a popular description of the theory of probability. Aczel's wide-ranging interests, which are evident in Complete Business Statistics, reflect the international scope of the author's experience, the authority of his educational background, and the practical bent he has displayed in his other writing. Aczel lives with his wife and daughter in the greater Boston area.

Jayavel Sounderpandian, now deceased, was a professor of quantitative methods at the University of Wisconsin–Parkside, where he taught business statistics and operations management for 24 years. He earned his doctoral and master's degrees in business from Kent State University and received his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. Before turning to academia, Sounderpandian worked as an engineer for seven years at an aircraft manufacturing company in India. Besides this textbook, Sounderpandian wrote four supplemental textbooks that focus on the use of spreadsheets in business statistics, market research, and operations management. He was devoted to the use of spreadsheet templates in the classroom, and applied that expertise in designing the more than 100 templates in this textbook. Sounderpandian's research interests were in decision and risk analysis, and he published widely in leading journals such as Operations Research, Abacus, Journal of Risk and Uncertainty, International Journal of Production Economics, and Interfaces. Professor Sounderpandian's interest in composing and solving mathematical puzzles informed many of the case studies in this textbook. He and his wife resided in Racine, Wisconsin, where they raised three daughters.
