Connect Learning

It may be easy to see the connections between school and work in a number of your classes, but some may be more difficult. Use the ABC method to analyze what you are learning today to how it benefits you later on, for example:

A=Actual event: “I have to take a science class, which doesn’t make sense since I’m an advertising major. What does dissecting a frog in general biology have to do with creating an effective sales campaign?”

B=Beliefs: “This course is a waste of my time that I could be spending learning related skills or getting actual on-the-job experience.”

C=Challenge: “I might not do well in this course since I’m not all that interested in the subject.”

“When I think about it, biology is a lot like connecting the dots—using my critical thinking skills to observe and assess a situation. The scientific method is all about accumulating data, determining an answer or rationale, and supporting my answer. A good ad campaign does the same—I look at demographics, trends, and what my competitors are doing; I develop a sales strategy or campaign; and I pitch it to clients and to potential customers. Taking biology helps me practice my critical thinking and creativity—two important skills I will need in advertising.”

“Now that I see the relevance of this course and its connection to my future career, I’m more motivated to participate and get the most out of this class. I now see this learning experience in a more positive light, and I understand how it will benefit me.”
