In the Classroom

Roxanne Jackson is a fashion design student who works part-time at a retail clothing store. She has two roommates, who are also students. Roxanne is a very social person. She is outgoing, enjoys being around people, and loves to talk and tell stories. However, Roxanne is a poor listener. In class, she is often too busy talking with the person next to her to pay attention to the class assignments. She always starts off as a popular study-group member, but it soon becomes clear that her assignments are always late and incorrect. Roxanne's roommates have finally confronted her. There is tension between them, because the roommates feel that Roxanne is not pulling her weight on household chores. Another major problem is that Roxanne does not seem to take accurate phone messages. She never seems to write down the correct information.

What strategies in this chapter can help Roxanne be a more effective listener?
