You've been invited to watch films and reflect and respond to Reel to Reals throughout this book. It is now time to switch roles! As future teachers, you will be challenged to develop assignments that are clear and promote meaningful learning. It is also common to use media in the classroom to inspire and inform students who are accustomed to edutainment. So, we are inviting you to apply your skills and creativity to write this chapter's Reel to Real Teaching.

Activity: Choose a film or television show with an educational theme. Here are a few suggestions:
  • A new film that has just burst onto the movie scene.
  • A film about education that has not been reviewed in earlier chapters. Browse your favorite video stores, educational resource center, or online listings for some ideas.
  • A film suitable to your subject area and grade level. For example, the Luzhin Defence for mathematics, Gandhi for social studies, Amadeus for music, Billy Elliot for character education. Visit Teach with Movies at www.teachwithmovies.org for additional movie titles.
  • A film mentioned in this text that you haven't yet seen.
Now, design an original Reel to Real Teaching, using the template presented in previous chapters.
  1. Write a brief synopsis of the film.
  2. Develop three or four reflection questions that encourage readers to connect the film's story with Chapter content and with personal experiences.
  3. Create a follow-up activity that applies themes from the film to real first-year classroom experiences, effective teaching, or your teaching interests.

Reflection: Add a brief, special paragraph that examines your development of the Reel to Real. How did it feel to change roles and create an activity? What did you learn from the process? Were you able to integrate content from the textbook? Did you enjoy initiating an activity versus responding to someone else's assignment? Was creativity the toughest part? Did you struggle with clear and concise directions?
