After reading Chapter 2, you should know and understand:

  • what news is, as viewed by readers, reporters and editors;
  • what makes a story interesting to read;
  • what readers want to read, as opposed to what writers want to write, and why research is important;
  • how a story gets written, from top to bottom;
  • how the news comes together at a typical metropolitan daily newspaper;
  • what each member of the news team does, and how they function;
  • the meanings of various words and phrases used in the news business;
  • what it takes to be a good reporter; and
  • what tools and talents a good reporter needs to be successful.
