Applying Theory to Policy
(See related pages)

World politics today is often divided between those who practice policy-making and those who study public policy. For academics, theory-building is an essential part of understanding the world; for many policymakers, theories often seem too abstract for reflecting the real world. Take some time to digest concepts of realism, liberalism, and constructivism (you may include one of the nontraditional theories as well), and then consider these questions:

  1. How well do theories help us to interpret real political events? Are there some theories that might be better suited for some events than others?

  2. Can theories of international relations offer guidance for actors faced with real political decisions? Conversely, do actors rely on theory at a subconscious level, unknowingly borrowing from principles?

  3. Do the various theories—realism, liberalism, constructivism—offer guidance on U.S. involvement in Iraq? How?
