The International Monetary Fund (IMF) was established in 1944 to help maintain monetary stability worldwide. Its lending program, however, is often blamed for exacerbating North-South inequality. Countries in the South claim that IMF loan conditionality, which includes the elimination of trade barriers, has created favorable conditions for the developed North at the expense of the underdeveloped South.
