The Future of the State: Will Nationalism Survive?
(See related pages)

Scholars have predicted the demise of nationalism since the end of World War II, but have been repeated rebuked by nationalist movements in Asia, Africa, and within the Soviet Union, among others. Using data from the Minorities At Risk (MAR) project (http://www.cidcm.umd.edu/mar/assessments.asp?regionId=99), analyze one ethno-nationalist group and consider the following questions:

  1. Does your group contribute to the sense of identity of the state? Does it desire independence?
  2. If your group seceded, would it prefer to remain independent, or join with a bordering country or separatist group?
  3. If you were given control over this particular group, how would your shape its future? What impact would this have on surrounding countries and peoples?
